Before you consign goods to auction
The first step to consigning goods for auction is to obtain an auction value that you are happy with. It is the job of our valuers to manage your expectations and provide complete customer satisfaction.
If your items are small items you can bring them, or a sample of them, to the auction saleroom for a free verbal auction value. See our opening times for days and times.
If your items are larger items and you are not able to bring them to the auction saleroom you can email photographs and one of our valuers will call you to discuss the items in detail and provide you with a free verbal auction value.
If you require a full property clearance we offer a free site visit where our valuer will give you a free verbal auction value. Before you pay someone to clear your property please check out the details of our property clearance service on our Clearances page.
Auction Value and Reserves
What's it worth?
'Lot 350 19th c glass vase by Lalique Estimate £300 - £400'. The private buyer, the avid collector and the dealer are all willing buyers, but there is only one vase. It is the highest bidder that will set the value or "market value" at this auction at this time.
The short answer to this much asked question is, "it's worth what someone will pay for it". However, if you do not wish to sell an item below a certain price you can set a reserve price on the item. Our valuers will use a number of criteria to value your item including: past sales, current trends, condition and of course the history/provenance of your item. Our valuers will be happy to suggest if a reserve would be appropriate on your item. It is important that you discuss your full expectations with our valuer in order that we can deliver on these.
It is our job attract multiple buyers to bid on your item enabling us to achieve the best possible hammer price on your behalf. We will never sell your item below the agreed reserve.
You can be sure that all your lots will be available to a wide audience of prospective buyers thanks to our comprehensive marketing programme. We provide all our buyers with a free auction alert service where we notify them when new lots matching their buying interest appear in our catalogue. Our full catalogue is advertised on this web site free of charge. Selected lots will also be illustrated on this web site also free of charge. It is our job to attract multiple buyers for your items.
Our sellers charges are probably the most simplistic you will find. All fees are discussed and mutually agreed at the time of consignment.
Our standard charge is £100 (minimum) or 25% whichever is the greater. They are all inclusive and include lotting, web entry, marketing, loss & damage warranty and VAT. They apply to an entire consignment of goods, not individual items.
We suggest a minimum consignment value of £400. A consignment can be one individual item or a collection of assorted or similar items.
We are happy to negotiate our standard charges for individual items of Jewellery, the rare, the unusual and the quirky.
All goods consigned to auction are subject to our full terms and conditions of business
